2016 was rough for some, and even rougher for others, so I wanted to start off 2017 with my (b)right foot forward!

BLEAK FRIDAY IS COMING!

According to a lot of movies, gathering the entire community together for an elaborate dance-party is the best kind of fundraiser, but since Mr. Bleak needs my help, and I lack the agility skills needed to whip or nae-nae, let alone host any kind of dance PARTY, I am going for a slightly different approach to save Mr. Bleak’s cemetery (also his HOME) from being destroyed by the city so they can build a dumb Virtual Reality Shopping Center, leaving him (and over 200 peaceful corpses) without a stone to rest his head. 

Starting THIS FRIDAY, November 25, at 12:01am EST (Midnight Thanksgiving Night), and ending December 2, I will instead try to sell enough shirts, pins and “Dicks”, to help Mr. Bleak buy the imaginary graveyard from the imaginary city and live happily every after! But even if we don’t raise enough to buy the graveyard, we are going to try to help out the Earth a little! For every order over $50, Mr. Bleak and I will donate $5 to the National Resource Defense Center to fight climate change and pollution and help the environment be safer for humans, animals, rocks, plants, glaciers, and even the corpses in Mr. Bleak’s graveyard!

I’m literally re-packing my suitcases for the third time to try to avoid an extra baggage charge before I run out the door to get on a plane to fly to Los Angeles so I apologize for the short, quick information, but long story short, I’M GOING TO DESIGNER CON! Designer Con is one of the best focused art & toy conventions in the country. “Every brawn needs a brain, and every brain needs a best friend! 

Two lonely treasure hunters, PACK & BACK, lived on opposite ends of the land of YUX, where they embarked separately on many quests in search of ancient artifacts scattered around the vibrant landscapes. However, both PACK & BACK also had their share of limitations by adventuring alone. PACK was obsessed with dirt and studying the different types of soil, deducting where buried treasures may lie, but lacked the strength and skill to dig. BACK, on the other hand, was strong and LOVED digging for treasure. He was obsessed with the dirt, too, but that’s because he liked EATING it! 

One day, PACK & BACK crossed paths while scouring the shores of a poisonous bog, and unexpectedly became immediate friends after sharing their mutual love for dirt. It was from that point on, that the new best friends shared their skills and abilities with each other, forming…THE BACKPACK, the greatest treasure hunters in the land of Yux.”

MONDO CON IS COMING!!!!

Something is creeping up on us all in a couple of weeks and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t rhyme with “Spawn, Blow Ron!” That’s right…MONDO-CON is (almost) HERE! If you aren’t familiar with Mondo Con, here’s a quick rundown: It’s an illustrator’s mecca and a poster-collector’s utopia in the middle of the most non-Texas part of Texas: Austin! 

Organized and curated by MONDO, the exhibit hall this year is packing in so many talented international illustrators and designers that I won’t be surprised if the actual EBAY website shows up to buy everything. 
Regardless, I am beyond lucky to be able to participate in the convention again this year, as it is easily one of my favorite (and most inspiring) shows of the year.
So I’m making my booth a little special this year. It’s hard standing out amongst a crowd of insanely talented Mondo artists like Jason Edmiston, Kevin Tong, Aaron Horkey and legends like Jock & William Stout, so I’m just going to be a Dick about it! Literally, I’m overflowing my booth with DICKS! Or, at least, drawings of Dicks. 

If you have been following my INSTAGRAM over the last few months, you may have seen my latest personal therapy: “DICK TRACING”, the repetitive and bizarre line drawings I’ve been creating revolving around my favorite 1940’s Detective, Dick Tracy. Don’t ask me what it means beyond an opportunity to spend my time making elaborate dick jokes, because I don’t have an answer, but I love drawing them. So I did it a lot. But what you may not know, is that the very first “Dick Tracing” that I drew was actually at Mondo-Con in 2014, so it seems fitting to bring my Dicks home this year! 

So, that’s exactly what I will be doing. This year, at my booth at Mondo Con, in addition to my art books, zines and enamel pins, I will be showcasing and selling over 100 ORIGINAL DICK TRACING drawings, all on sale for $50 each, and all measuring an impressive 7 inches! This may be the only time you get to see THIS MANY DICKS all in one place, just “hanging out” together! No limit on how many Dicks you can buy. And just like a circle jerk, its first come, first served! So come by my booth first and check out my Dicks! 

Also, it wouldn’t be Mondo Con if I didn’t offer up some ultra-rare screenprints, so I’m doing that, too! I’ll have a very small amount of random VERY RARE posters and artist proofs, some that I have never actually had for sale before. Over the course of 6 years, I would occasionally paint a quick watercolor portrait of one of my favorite movie “monsters” as a little therapy break. This side project quickly became an obsession in revisiting every movie I loved growing up and making myself smile along the way. Last year, all 185 paintings were collected individually and published in my latest art book, called “Doppelgängers”. However, now, all of these maniacs are finally hanging out at the same party. All 185 of my favorite monsters on one giant horrific print.

My favorite time of year is almost upon us. A time when you can don a cape with pride. A time when you can wear a fanny pack as a genuine utility belt. A time when you can yell “I’M MR. MEESEEKS LOOK AT ME!” and people respond with “You’re AWESOME, Bro!” instead of running the opposite direction. 

Yes. The Mardi Gras of NerdDom that is COMIC CON will be emerging from the grounds beneath San Diego and entering our dimension for 5 days, transfixing 200,000 of us into drooling fanboys fueled off of free flyers, giant bags, and the slim possibility of running into Daryl Dixon at a urinal.

And this year, for my 15th time in 16 years, I WILL BE THERE alongside two of my best, most creative friends, Dave Correia and Jon Wayshak at our usual location, BOOTH 5502 located right inside the main “A” Entrance (or as we have referred to it as, right inside the “A-Hole”). Our 20-foot long booth will be packed with purchasable-nightmares from the 3 of us, so PLEASE make sure you come by our booth AT LEAST ONCE in your epic journey of zombie-dodging, line-sitting, nacho-eating and joker-spotting.
